Mr. Knell's Class Webpage

Hello students and parents! Welcome to our class webpage. I have
a lot to share with you, from our weekly news to information about our
take home reports. Students will receive ample written documentation of
the information that needs your attention. This webpage is meant to be a
second source of that information, but also to share information about
what our students are learning in second grade. You can still reach me at
the school, or through email (joseph_knell@hcpss.org). I will do my best
to get back to you in a timely manner. Thanks for taking the time to
visit our webpage. I appreciate all of the support our students receive
at home and look forward to sharing in the successes of these children.

Language Arts
We have been really busy the past few months, examining inferential thinking. We started working with fiction, and have moved to non fiction. As we finish with non fiction, we will begin to study poetry. As for writing, we have been working on biographies and penguin reports. During the week of Stanford 10, we will be working on writing our own poetry, and learning about dinosaurs. Once we have finished with dinosaurs, we will move to Fairy Tales. After poetry we will switch gears from making inferences to determining importance. I hope to make the most of our last quarter.
Math:
We just finished our time unit, and will now begin working with money. Our money unit will focus on the different amounts of coins, solving word problems involving money, and making change. Our next unit will be Statistics, followed by our final unit, multiplication and division.
Content
Most of our content time will be used to prepare for the Stanford 10 test. We will soon resume our Economy unit. During this unit we will examine economic choices, resources, goods, and services. Then we will focus on our Butterfly Unit in Science, where each student will get their own butterfly larva as we watch them go through the butterfly life cycle.
