Welcome to Mrs. Shilling's Class
All About Me: WOW! 11 years have flown by! I began teaching in Howard County in 1997 and this is my 12th year teaching! It's wonderful to teach in the same school system that I went through as a student. I am so lucky to have been teaching at Elkridge Elementary School for the past 11 years. 5th Grade is my home and I have taught 5th Grade for all 11 years. As a matter of fact, my first class of 5th graders are out of college!!:)
I am married to a wonderful man named Jeff who works for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue. I have a terrific step-son, Chase, who entered 7th grade this year and brightens my day with his smile. In January, we welcomed a new addition, our son, Aidan, to our family. He is a bundle of joy! We also have a 3 year old Boxer named Tyson who keeps us playful!
The Shilling family are avid football fans:) My husband and I are die-hard Cowboys fans (and Aidan, too!) while Chase is a fan of the Buccanneers, Ravens, and Cowboys. I enjoy spending time with my family, whether we are vacationing in Ocean City, riding amusement park rides, watching Chase play Soccer or Basketball, going to his band concerts and watching in awe as he plays his trumpet, playing with the dog, or watching Big Brother and Survivor at home. In my spare time, I enjoy reading books for my monthly book club, listening to music, shopping, and picking out things for our new baby.
I am looking forward to another wonderful year at EES and working with your children!!!!

Book-It Policy:
This information will remain on the website for the rest of the year. Students are not required to read over the holidays or weekends, only if they choose to do so. However, they must be sure that by the end of the month they have read at least 400 minutes:) *Read for 20 minutes or more and record on your Book-It calendar. This calendar will be collected and taken as a grade for Reading. Calendars are to be handed in by the second school day of the following month. If students hand in their calendars by the second day, they will receive all credit if complete. If they hand in their calendar after the second school day of each month, they will lose 5 of the 15 points possible. Howard County curriculum requires students to read 25 books during the calendar year. Our method of tracking to
fulfill this objective is through the use of Book-It. Parent letters were sent home regarding our graded Book-It program. Attached to the letter is the September Book-It calendar. Students may choose to read more than 20 minutes per night to fulfill the 400 minutes requirement. Also, if your child loses their calendar, it is their responsibility to let the me know that they are in need of a new one. Also, parent notes will no longer be considered for full credit, since we have to hold the students accountable for reading appropriate texts and having read each night.
Homework Policy:
Homework is assigned every Monday through Thursday night is Math, Reading, and Spelling (Spelling alternates with Wordly Wise once the program starts). Occasionally, homework will be assigned in Science, Social Studies, and Writing classes. Homework is due the following day. Students who do not complete homework assignments are required to fill out a "Homework Excuse Note", identifying the missing assignment and must have this note signed by a parent. Thes Homework Excuse Notes act as an important method of comminucation between the teacher and the parent. It is the student's responsibility to show his/her parent the Homework Excuse Note. (It is impossible for us to contact every parent of every child that misses a homework assignment throughout the day). Please discuss the
Homework Excuse Notes with your child so that he/she is comfortable showing them to you. The student is also required to come in for "Homework Club", during recess, to complete the assignment. Assignments that are not completed during initial Homework Club, must be finished in Homework Club the following day. Homework is very important and must be taken seriously. Homework allows for extra practice on concepts taught in class and reinforces what was taught. Students need this extra practice to help retain the information. Also, homework is a great method of communication between home and school, it keeps parents up to date on what is being taught.
