I will be beginning my seventh year of teaching at Wilde Lake High School today, however it will be my 33rd year of teaching. When I graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a BSE, double majoring in mathematics and Spanish, I never dreamed that my teaching experience would be such an adventure. I have had the pleasure to teach in Arkansas, Kansas, Florida, California, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Germany. My teaching experience has ranged from teaching 7th graders to teaching adults at the Education Center on a NATO base in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Most of my experience was in California at a very diverse high school in the San Francisco Bay Area where I taught for 11 years. I have
taught Spanish I, AVID, International Baccalaureate Math Studies, Basic Math, Consumer Math, Business Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, Algebra II GT, Geometry, Precalculus, and Math 100 and Math 101 (UMUC).
In 1999, after many years of teaching and working non-stop during the summers on special programs, teaching summer school, and many, many other odd jobs, I had an opportunity to move to Sicily. I lived there with friends (NAS Sigonella) for 6 months and then took a job working for City Colleges of Chicago and University of Maryland University College at Eagle Base in Bosnia-Herzegovina where I worked for 16 months. (Yes, I wore BDUs) Finally I received the call I had been waiting for from DoDEA and I was offered at job in Germany at Rose Barracks, Vilseck, Bavaria. I worked in Germany for 4 years before returning to be closer to family and friends.
In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading, hiking, quilting and trying to learn how to play guitar. Two years ago, I took my first cruise in the eastern Mediterranean and am now hooked on cruising. I taught summer school for the fourth year and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I took a basket weaving class last summer and made my first basket in about 25 years and am now scheduled for more classes. A reunion of old friends I taught with in Germany in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware was my big trip for the summer but I'm planning short trips on the east coast throughout the fall. Yes, I am busy but I try to enjoy every minute of life.
This year I am teaching Algebra 2 GT and Precalculus Regular. I love discovering the beauty and wonder of mathematics with my students. I learn best by visualizing the problem and enjoy problems which can be approached in a variety of ways. My hope for this school year is for the positive energy in the classroom to allow each of us to truly enjoy this beautiful subject and have a very successful year. Please be open to new ideas, try your best at all times, and communicate openly about concerns you might have concerning the course.
Sincerely,
Ms. Vernon
