The Howard County Public School System employs nearly 70 school psychologists to support the academic achievement of all students through the provision of psychological services in the schools. Maria Brickley, CAS, NCSP is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist based at Fulton Elementary School five days per week. She is closely involved with administration, the PAR coordinator, the counselor, teachers, and parents to help promote the academic achievement of all children. She provides a full range of services, both indirect and direct, to support the needs of all Fulton Elementary School students. Consultation
* Participates and facilitates several problem-solving teams (ICT, IEP, 504) to support academic achievement
* Helps school staff understand learning and behavior problems and the effects on student outcomes
* Provides suggestions and recommendations to promote success in the classroom and at home
* Strengthens relationships between school staff, home, and community agencies
* Provides recommendations for community resources and helps to promote access
* Advocates for student needs both in and out of school
* Provides direct support to students in regional programs for children with challenging behaviors and for multi-intense needs children
Intervention
* Provides individual and group counseling to students during the school day when it is deemed necessary to directly support academic goals, in areas such as frustration management, social skills, and positive coping strategies
* Develops behavior intervention plans when necessary to support students whose behaviors impede their learning and/or the learning of other students
* Develops and supports the implementation of educational strategies and interventions to support students in critical skill areas
* Assists students, staff, and families with crises, such as loss or separation
* Helps students to problem-solve conflicts
Prevention
* Participates in the school’s problem-solving teams (The Instructional Consultation Team, IEP, and 504 teams)
* Helps to identify potential learning problems
* Provides strategies to help parents and teachers address disruptive behavior
* Helps promote a climate of tolerance and diversity
* Participates in the schoolwide Crisis Team, which meets throughout the year to ensure adequate preparation in the event of a situation affecting a significant portion of the school population. The Crisis Team trains staff regarding what to do in the event of a crisis situation. The Crisis Team also promotes activities, such as suicide awareness and prevention, through schoolwide presentations and information dissemination.
Education
* Availability to conduct staff trainings and workshops on topics that directly pertain to academic achievement and student success
* Past topics have included Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, Reading and Math interventions, Parenting and Teaching At-Risk students, Asperger’s Syndrome/Disorder and Autism, Strategies for Working with Difficult Students in the Classroom, and Suicide Risk Reporting Procedures
Assessment
* When formal assessments are indicated through an IEP or 504 team decision, a wide variety of techniques are used to assess the student’s level of functioning
* Areas of functioning may include academic skills, learning aptitudes, social-emotional and behavioral functioning, social skills, assessment of the learning environment and social climate, and eligibility for special education services
