How to Decipher the Grade Sheetjoke10.gif

Your child's grade is weighted by category:
Homework 10%
Classwork 20%
Tests and Quizzes        70%

To compute the overall grade:
Multiply the Homework average by 0.10
Multiply the Classwork average by 0.20
Multiply the Test and Quizzes average by 0.70

Add them all up for the overall percentage grade.

Let's look at a few examples below:

Bob B.

85% homework average ...
multiply that by 0.10
... giving you ...
8.5%
80% classwork average ...
multiply that by 0.20
... giving you ...
16.0%
62% tests and quizzes average ...
multiply that by 0.70
... giving you ...
43.4%
For an overall grade of ...
67.9%

For Bob B., even though he had a good homework and classwork average, his test and quizzes average brought his grade WAY down since it is worth so much more than homework and classwork.

Suzie Q.

55% homework average ...
multiply that by 0.10
... giving you ...
5.5%
70% classwork average ...
multiply that by 0.20
... giving you ...
14.0%
90% tests and quizzes average ...
multiply that by 0.70
... giving you ...
63.0%
For an overall grade of ...
82.5%

For Suzie Q., even though she had a poor homework average and just a mediocre classwork average, her outstanding test and quizzes average was good enough to keep her at a B overall.  Many students feel that this is the way to go, but it is disheartening because if Suzie had done all of her homework and a little better on classwork, she could have gotten an A.
