Engineering Challenges

IEEE Robot Challenge

On the weekend of 14/15 April 2012, 59 teams from around the state met at the Baltimore Museum of Industry for the final portion of the IEEE Robot Challenge. Demonstrating the performance of their robot and providing an oral and written report culminated over two month of preparation on the part of each team. By far the most popular category was the two-legged manual robot with 53 entries.

And the top two teams in this category were from Wilde Lake. "Team Maryland", represented at the challenge by team leaders Tim Virostek and Josh Tulkoff took first place and "Robo-Rilla", represented at the challenge by Arissa Falat and Eldar Zeynalov came in a close second.

First Robotics

The Wilde Bunch team #4137 went to the FIRST Robotics competition in DC just before spring break and as a rookie team we were very pleased with our performance. Only one other rookie team from South Carolina ranked higher than us. Our final ranking was 34th out of 63. Our highest ranking during the competition was 27th. Our team really pulled together as a team and learned a lot that weekend. To score points the robots had to shoot baskets and balance, which we did both! In this team I saw the maturity and leadership skills really develop in this culminating activity.

Cargo Airplane Challenge

Please congratulate Eric Webber and Alexander Broholm of team "Above the Clouds" for winning the Cargo Airplane Challenge.

Speech and English

On Saturday 2/25, three Wilde Lake students participated in the National Forensics League Chesapeake District Finals. This district covers Virginia, DC, Maryland and Delaware. Out of a very tight field in Dramatic interpretation, Nikhil Manohar won 1st place. And the team of Russell Rollow and Nikhil Manohar placed 1st in duo interpretation and will be the sole team to represent the district at the NFL national championship tournament in Indianapolis this June.

Medalists include: Rachel Allred, Danielle Ortmann, Connor Adamson, Henry Enerson, Duncan Enerson, Russell Rollow, and Nikhil Manohar, who was again named top competitor! The team won 2nd place over all and was the highest rated public school.

After the meet, qualifiers for post season competition were announced. 10 Wilde Lake students qualified, our most ever! Nikhil Manohar qualified in 4 events, Russell Rollow in 3, and Jimmy Siettmann and Rachel Allred in 2 events. Other qualifiers are: Danielle Ortmann, J.D. Sykes, Dayva Frank, Connor Adamson, Henry Enerson and Duncan Enerson.

Please congratulate the Speech and Debate Team who placed 2nd out of 25 schools at Saturday's (28 January) meet at Reservoir High. He also won Gold in Duo Interpretation, with partner Russell Rollow, and placed second in the all-around competition.
